DIY Party Decorations on a Budget

Here’s a riddle for you: What’s expensive, soulless, and takes a load of time to do? Drum roll please… The opposite of our Budget DIY party decorations suggestions! That’s right, we have some cute but creative ways for you to turn your room from a decoration-less disaster to a fun-filled frenzy!

Cherry Party Balloons

You’ll need:

  • 2 Red Balloons (minimum)
  • 1 sheet of green card (per two balloons)
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • A ball of string
  • Glue stick/Glue gun

How to:

  1. Fold the card in half, then use a pencil to sketch out the shape of a leaf
  2. With the card folded, cut the shape out so that you’re left with two leaves
  3. Use the glue stick to stick both leaves together, facing slightly diagonally from one another
  4. Inflate the balloons
  5. Cut your string 30 – 40cm long and make a knot around each of the balloons
  6. Glue the other ends of the string to the back of the card leaves, but make sure to leave plenty of excess string after the glue
  7. Tie the rest of your string across two points in your room (this one’s up to you how you do it)
  8. With the remaining excess string from the back of the card, wrap it around the string from the last step and tie a knot

Tissue Paper Pom Poms

You’ll need:

  • Scissors
  • Wire cutters
  • 10 sheets of tissue paper (per one pompom)
  • Thin crafts wire
  • String

How to:

  1. Stack the sheets, then fold the pile to look like an accordion, and make sure they’re done right by pressing down hard on them after
  2. Using scissors, round the ends of the stack to make a scalloped edge, or if you want spiked spheres, cut triangle points instead.
  3. Loop a long piece of wire around the middle of the stack and twist to secure it in place, and make a hanging loop with the excess end of the wire.
  4. Fan out the tissue paper by very gently pulling on each sheet to form a pom-pom.. Attach a ribbon or string to the wire loop, to hang the pom-poms (this part is up to you)

Washi Tape Straws and Bottles

You’ll need:

  • Washi tape
  • Scissors
  • Straws

How to:

  1. Measure a piece of Washi tape to your desired length
  2. Place the straw in the middle, with the sticky side facing up, and stick the ends of the tape together
  3. Use the scissors to cut into shapes or trim the ends

Mini Hot Air Balloons

You’ll need:

  • Small basket (the size is up to you, but we would recommend using a light material)
  • 25cm spherical paper lantern
  • Ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun
  • String/fishing wire

How to:

  1. Cut 4 pieces of ribbon at 20cm (again, you can eyeball the length)
  2. Glue the ends to the inside of the rim on the bottom of the lantern
  3. Glue each of the other ends to the inside 4 walls of the basket
  4. Insert the expander and tie the string/fishing wire to it
  5. Hang from the wire

Piñata

You’ll need:

  • A cardboard box
  • Ribbon
  • Crepe streamers
  • A glue stick
  • Scissors
  • Tape

How to:

  1. Open the box from the top & bottom, then use the scissors to cut down the length of one corner, where two of the sides meet
  2. Poke two holes in the top and feed each end of the ribbon through and tie a knot on the inside
  3. Cut out the inner flaps from bottom, so that you’re left with only two covering flaps
  4. Tape all of the cut parts back together, but leave space between them (so it’s easier to break)
  5. Cut the inner flaps of the top, then fill your Piñata with your chosen treats
  6. Using the scissors, cut slits along the crepe streamers (make sure to not cut all the way through)
  7. Use the glue stick to glue down the crepe streamers one layer at a time (the closer, the better) on the top & sides

Let’s get this party started!
